Our Practice

Fractional General Counsel

It's not uncommon for a law firm lawyer to serve as an "outside general counsel" – that is, the first call a client makes when they need legal advice and don’t have an in-house lawyer. Our firm does this for many clients, providing trusted counsel and responsive legal support.

However, in recent years, our attorneys have taken on more deeply embedded roles with select clients that go beyond the traditional outside general counsel arrangement. For select clients, we will serve in high-intensity, transformational capacities— whether on “special assignment” to help a client manage through a transition, or to help a unicorn or an emerging unicorn go from a legal department of 0 to 1. This practice is particularly relevant in today’s age, in which an ambitious client can go from inception & seed funding to having global partners and substantial legal complexities in a short period of time.

In this capacity we participate directly as members of the executive teams of our clients. We act as their principal liaison and clearing house for legal matters facing them, managing outside counsel of different disciplines (whether employment, immigration, patent, compliance, corporate or myriad others). This helps the CEOs, CFOs, CTOs and COOs focus on the business.

These engagements require a greater time commitment and hands-on involvement than typical outside counsel relationships. We work closely within the business to assess and improve operational efficiency and drive strategic progress.
